Phone in hand Wednesday afternoon, Brody tapped out the number on the card he’d swiped from his sister’s desk after the press conference.

He was about to do something incredibly stupid and reckless. And totally out of character.

Okay, maybe not so out of character, at least not the reckless part.

Stupid, he wasn’t. Usually. This could be really stupid.

But…he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about Tara all last night. He’d fucking dreamed about her. And this morning when he woke, she was his first thought, the only thing on his mind when what he should be thinking about was getting stronger so he’d be ready to play when the season started in October.

His focus needed to be squarely on his conditioning.

At the very least, he needed her to tell him to fuck off. And he would.

And if she didn’t?

He’d jump that shark when he came to it.

More like, you’ll jump her bones every chance you get.

“Jesus, you’re a fucking idiot.”

He put the phone down on the table next to the couch then picked it up again seconds later.

“Fuck it.”

He tapped the call button.

It rang. And rang. And just before he was about to hang up, he heard an out-of-breath “Hello?”

“Uh, hey, Tara. It’s, uh, Brody Mitchell.”

He wasn’t sure but he thought he heard her suck in a quick breath. And maybe choke on it just a little.

“Brody? What—why are you calling?”

Good question and one he probably shouldn’t take offense to. But he did.

“I think we need to talk.”

She didn’t even pause to think. “I don’t think we have anything to talk about. That night was a…”

What? A mistake?

If she really thought that, why didn’t she just say it?

“Was what, Tara?”

She fell silent and he all he wanted was for her to talk. The sound of her voice made him hard. That in itself told him he’d been right to call. And the fact that she still hadn’t hung up on him gave him hope.

“Look,” he said, “I understand where you’re coming from but…I really think we need to talk about what happened.”

Another pause. And then a huff. “And by talk you mean sex. Or am I wrong?”

Fuck no, she wasn’t wrong. All he’d been able to think about today was sex with Tara. He couldn’t make himself believe he’d never again have sex with Tara.

“Honestly, no, you’re not wrong. Yes, I want to get you in bed again, but I also think we need to discuss…everything that happened.”

Her pause this time was longer but he knew she hadn’t hung up because the call didn’t disconnect.

He hoped she’d done her homework. If she had, she’d know he wasn’t going to give up. He had a reputation for patience on the ice. Offense hated him because he couldn’t be deked.

And the reason they couldn’t was because he spent hours studying his opponents.

Not that she was an opponent. But he figured he had to treat her as one until he got her where he wanted her. Which was in front of him. And under him.
